Etihad First Class (last minute) award availability WIDE OPEN!

Etihad First Class (last minute) award availability WIDE OPEN!

Always playing around with looking at awards space speculatively, mostly just for fun or to look at availability for future trips, you sometimes stumble on some real gems. Well, that’s what has happened here recently.

The day before my recent Etihad Business Studios flight from AUH-IAD I was looking at possibly routing through London in order to take the First Apartments (for a second time). This really opened my eyes to an amazing trend – Etihad is opening almost all their first class A380 availability at the last minute.

I didn’t post this a week ago because I wanted to make sure the trend sustained, and it absolutely has.

My search has focused on all the current A380 routes for the last 8 days or so.

AUH-LHR on the A380 – 6 seats!

The opposite way a few days later – 5 seats!

6 seats on each flight!

While I was excited, I’ve already taken the LHR-AUH flight. It’s AMAZING and my review will be coming soon, but the flight was just too short! It’s almost a tease. You really need another 1.5-2 hours to really be able to enjoy all the flight has to offer.

When I really got excited was when I saw the two long flights, to Sydney and New York, were also wide open!

Even to Sydney – wide open!

To JFK!

While the A380 flights to JFK don’t have any last minute award availability, that’s not the least bit surprising. The flight is literally brand new, and I suspect it won’t have last minute availability for quite some time.

Conclusion

This is fantastic. While we’ve flown first class on Cathay, Etihad, Singapore (Suites and normal), and JAL – the First Apartment is in a league of it’s own (and I swear my review is coming soon – promise!). Having award availability like this can be especially useful when redeeming AA miles. Since they let you just pay the difference in the fare (in miles), you could easily book these flights in business, enjoy your trip, and at the end of the trip hope to be able to upgrade! And even if you can’t, you’ll be fine, the business studios on the A380 and B787 are incredible (this review is coming too!).

    • Nice, James! You’ll absolutely love it. I’m dying to get on one of the long segments for our next trip. 7 1/2 hours is far too short!

      • I hate both you guy just because I am SO jealous of both of you! I need to get on that A380! HAHA

  1. Can we book these flights with qantas or virgin points? We have traveled to europe on Emirates A380 and would love to experience Etihad

    • To my knowledge Etihad is not partners with any of the Virgin airlines or Qantas so I don’t think you can.
