Flight Review: SilkAir Economy Class SIN-HKT

After an uneventful stay in the SATS Lounge it was time to head to the gate for our final flight.  We left the lounge fairly early because unlike other airports, the security for the flight was at the gate itself and I wanted to make sure we had plenty of time.  The line ended up moving fairly quickly and we only spent about 10 minutes sitting at the gate before boarding.

Here is the trip so far!

As many of you know, SilkAir is the regional airline run by Singapore Airlines for their short-haul flights.  Unlike our earlier flight which was in a huge First Class cabin, this flight would be in plain old economy.

Airline: SilkAir
Route: MI750 SIN-HKT
Cabin: Economy
Plane: A320
Seats: 8E and 8F
Flight time: 1 hours and 45 minutes

I debated whether to fly economy or business up until the week before the flight but in the end I just didn’t think it was worth it to pay twice as many points and increased fuel surcharges for a short flight that I thought would have a marginal difference.  And after taking the flight, I’m really glad I saved my miles and money!

We entered through the forward most door and past by the 4 rows of business class seats before arriving at row 8 which is the third row of the economy section.  Once the plane had boarded I was even happier that I hadn’t paid the extra for business class as Katie and I had an empty seat in our row as well!

After sitting down we found a pretty standard economy seat with the cabin being laid out in a 3-3 pattern.  The seat pitch is 32-inches which is roughly what a Southwest Airlines seat would be.

After take off several small screens were lowered from the ceiling and TV shows was played. With no interest in these shows I looked around the seat pocket and found a form for an entertainment system that worked on my mobile device called SilkAir Studio.

I pulled it up on my phone using the directions and found an entertainment library that featured movies, TV , travel information and music!  It wasn’t an extensive selection but I was pretty impressed on such a small plane and short flight that this was even an option!

After playing with SilkAir Studio for a little while it was time for our meal.  Another surprise on this small flight which would take just over an hour and half!

After being given a “Refreshing wet towel” it was time for a SilkAir breakfast.  This meal included a rice and chicken curry dish with water, green beans coffee and a roll.  There was also a second option that Katie got but I don’t have pictures of it and I can’t recall exactly what it was.

The meal was simple and perfect for this short flight.  I actually really liked it and clean my whole plate!  I also needed a couple coffee refills since my body now had no idea what time it was suppose to be and if I should actually be awake or not.

After eating it was pretty much time to start our descent so I spent the remainder of the flight trying to get my first glimpses of Thailand!

CONCLUSION

Overall, I was really pleasantly surprised with this flight.  I of course knew that it would be a far, far cry from the two flights we had just experienced, but having a good full meal and entertainment library, even though it was limited on such a short flight, really impressed me. It also probably helped that we had a bit more room with there being no one else in our row. I was really happy with my decision to save my miles and money and stick with economy and would certainly recommend this flight for 10.6K points and of course if the price was right! Especially since I was able to connect it to my other flights and have our bags checked all the way through.

RECOMMEND!

  1. Kevin, We really like the idea of purchasing shorter regional coach flights ($s or points) to maximize the long hauls in F. Flight looked good and you hit the lottery with a seat open on your 3-bench.

    • Yeah, there was a couple reasons I booked this segment with points and seperately. I used points because even though it was short it was going for $350-400! Second, if you book SQ awards online you get a 15% discount and I couldn’t get it to price out LAX all the way to HKT in First so I just did them seperately to get my discount, knowing I could combine them at the airport. Finally, I was still not 100% sure what our route was going to be so if I wanted I could always cancel that last segment and fly somewhere else.

Also, not sure if you have flown it, but AirAsia was a great way to get around Asia on short hops!
Definitely got lucky with the empty seat! haha

      • We haven’t done AirAsia but do want to try them at some point. They really seem to have a HUGE footprint in that area of the world. We’ll have to add SilkAir to that list as well. I don’t mind the low cost carriers if the flight is under a few hours because at the end of the day all we want are those extra long segments in First. 😉
