Flight Review: SriLankan Airlines Economy Class MLE-CMB

My two reviews of our paradise resort have come to an end. If you’re sad just imagine how sad it is to write about it and remember how awesome it was. It sucks.

Anyway, the PH Maldives may be past us, but there are still some great parts of the trip still to come!

It’s now time to review our only economy flight of the entire trip – Maldives to Colombo on SriLankan Airlines!

I love flying and experiencing new airlines, so I was quite excited just to see what it’d be like – even if it wasn’t in a premium cabin.

After our puddle-jumper flight to MLE we were ready to get going to CMB and then HKG!

Malé

We arrived at MLE a few hours early (about 3, I believe), so we headed to the Leeli Lounge. It was nice to get on the WiFi, grab a few lite snacks and some coffee, and just relax for a few hours before heading downstairs into what would be a chaotic boarding process.

Disastrous boarding area

Jaime and I got down to the boarding area with what we believed was about 5 minutes until boarding started. Much to my surprise, the boarding gate sign (tv) said it was closed and had another flight up next! I naturally started panicking and found the closest agent to get some more information (freaking out inside).

I found out we weren’t the only ones freaking out. There were other couples wondering what was going on here too! Finally we found an agent who basically said, “Stop, you’re fine”. Two minutes later boarding started and that went smoothly…..just kidding guys it really didn’t go smoothly at all!

And boarding begins…

Extremely nice seating area with lots of comfortable seating…oh, and a dessert stand. Why did I waste my time upstairs in the lounge?!

Basically boarding was a free-for-all. Not extremely surprising, but it didn’t help that a lot of people were concerned that they had missed their flight and were pushing through others to find out what was going on. Simply having the flight information on the boarding sign could have probably solved all of this.

But I digress. Onto the flight!

Excited to fly a new airline!

First class. Looks perfectly spacious for this hour flight. Very comparable to domestic first.

We headed down the aisle to row 9 and I took my seat on the aisle.

Looking towards the front

Originally our plan was to check out a lounge in Colombo while waiting for our flight to Hong Kong. However, our flight ended up leaving MLE about 30 minutes late, effectively killing most of our layover. Now I know it’s hard to believe that the flight was delayed considering the awesome experience thus far but I swear it really was!

I’m a regular subscriber to Serendib, but it is nice having it to read on a flight when I leave it on my coffee table.

A little pre-dinner cleanup!

Jaime, as she’s known to do, slept on the flight while I enjoyed some of the fine SriLankan delicacies!

Dinner! Not bad for an hour or so flight!

I chose the chicken dish (yes, that’s chicken). It wasn’t too shabby

Next thing you know we had touched down in Colombo and most of our plane rushed off to catch connecting flights to India.

Recap:

Food: Not bad for what it is. For an hour flight I was impressed by their quick serving. Though I hated how they gave you tiny things of water – they were about one sip worth.

Seat: No IFE which kind of sucks but as americans we are very used to. More importantly my seat wouldn’t recline, at all, and neither would Jaime’s. Very strange.

Service: By far the redeeming factor on the flight. Attendants were courteous and efficient – two of the most important factors on a short flight.

Despite the terrible boarding process and significantly delayed flight (32 minutes), the flight was actually quite enjoyable for what it was. The worst part about the delay was the lack of communication. There were a lot of people freaking out about the delay worried about missing their connection and the crew never said a word….not cool.

Anyway, they were able to serve drinks, get out meals and clean it all up in about an hour. Friendly flight attendants and an awesome in-flight magazine left little to complain about!

Next up: Cathay Business Class to Hong Kong!
