Incredible First Class Fares from South Africa to the US!
I usually use miles to fly internationally in premium cabins but sometimes I like to go around and check out the deals from different places to see what things might cost if I had to pay for it.
One of my favorite countries is South Africa and in the running for one of my favorite cities in the world is Capetown.
We will be heading there again this July and have our flights over in the Etihad Apartment to Abu Dhabi and then Business class to Johannesburg.
It is known that there can be some great business class deals, pretty consistently out of Cairo, Egypt and Colombo, Sri Lanka, but I noticed something interesting when looking at flights for some family members out of South Africa for our trip.
First Class flights that usually cost $15-20K round-trip were a fraction of that cost! Now, you have to originate in Johannesburg, South Africa, BUT if you are planning 2 trips to the continent in a years time, or want a trip to the connecting city on the flight back then this could be a really cool opportunity.
The two main carries? Emirates and Etihad!
The Etihad flight, if you fly them to New York (although you don’t have to) then you can fly Business class to Abu Dhabi and then First Class APARTMENTS to New York! Then for the return you can again take the Apartments and then Business Class to Jo-burg or forget the checked bag and hang out in Abu Dhabi! (throwing away the last segment) Now, it’s not cheap but I am seeing this flights pretty consistently for about $5,400 round-trip!
So it might not be first class the whole way (Business Class is also nice to Abu Dhabi) but for two 13 hour flights in The Apartments and a pretty comfortable ride to and from Africa this really isn’t too bad!
Here are some of the prices I saw to Washington DC and New York (A380 flights to New York). Most of what I looked at was leaving in the spring and returning in the Fall, but there seems to be other times that work as well.
So, lets say that you really like trying new first class products but that is still a little pricey for your blood. Well, might want to check out the Emirates prices then!
Again, pretty consistently I am seeing round-trip flights from Johannesburg to New York, Washington DC, etc. for around $4,400! Again, still a lot of money but for these flights you would be in the A380 with their on-board bar and shower for your flight to Dubai and then to the US (as well as back the other way of course). These seems to start with depatrting JNB around mid-April with return flights anytime between then and the end of the schedule for the most part.
If you want to go a little further to Los Angeles it is a little more pricey at around $5,000 but still A LOT of flying in Emirates First Class.
On top of the great flights you can also get a ton of miles to use later. Looking at the charts you can get a good amount of Alaska Airlines miles by crediting your Emirates flights to them.
Also, for Etihad you can either credit it to their program or both ANA and Korean seem to be good programs to get credited towards.
So if you have any thoughts of visiting the continent of Africa twice in a year, or even once to Africa and then a trip to Dubai/Abu Dhabi then I would seriously consider this.
Book a flight with points to JoBurg, enjoy the awesome country and then get back in style!
I just wish I could get there twice or was leaving from South Africa so I could at least think about taking advantage of this (actually flying back from Mauritius).
Throw Jo-burg in to the group with Cairo and Colombo as a place to check out for cheap premium cabin deals! The business deals were just ‘okay’ ($3-4K) but the First Class fares are clearly outstanding for the amount of flying. I didn’t look at all dates but it seems pretty extensive, at least between next spring and the end of the schedule.
