HAPPY MARDI GRAS!! After you are done watching Zulu and Rex roll this morning you will need to grab some grub, and likely take a nice long nap. Here are a hand full of the best Po-boy places that I have found over the years in New Orleans.
In no particular order:
Located in Jefferson Parish, off of Jefferson Hwy this delicious stop is owned by the same gentleman who owns and runs Jacques-Imo’s which we talked about in our Top 5 Dinner Places. They have all your favorites like Shrimp, Oyster, Catfish, Turkey, etc but they also have their specialty Po-Boys and this is how Crabby Jack’s becomes a must visit on my list. The BBQ Brisket and Fried Green Tomato & Remoulade Sauce are AWESOME and I could probably eat them just about every day. This place has a very New Orleans feel when you enter and if you do arrive during Mardi Gras there is usually someone handing out free beer! Although their location is a bit of a drive, we would go here to get Po-Boys for our crew during Mardi Gras at least once every year. They have many other great selection as well, but be aware, they are closed on Sunday.
If I want a fried seafood Po-Boy, then this is the place. Located Uptown on Annunciation St., this hole-in-the-wall is in a residential area and can be easily missed if you are not looking closely for it. It is a small 1 room place with 8 or so bar stools and just a handful of 4 top tables. But what it may lack in style (and seating) it more than makes up for in food! There are many different sliced meat Po-Boys to choose from but do yourself a favor and get one with fried seafood on it. Whether it is Shrimp, Oyster, Catfish or a half and half, you will not be disappointed. I always seem to go for the half shrimp, half oyster.
As you go into Jefferson Parish away from Orleans Parish down River Rd you will find a great little Tavern with some outstanding Po-boys. I have only been here once (and loved it) so I had my buddy Bill tell you more about it:
“Originally built in the early 1900’s, the Rivershack tavern on River Rd. in Jefferson parish has had many lives since, including as a bar, grocery store, home, and finally as a bar/restaurant. It made a national name for itself when a recent renovation removed decades old asbestos shingles revealing mint-condition 1940’s advertisements on the outside. While this is interesting, the real reason to drive out here is the authentic cajun poboys! Whether you want alligator, roast beef, seafood, or their special Garbage Fry poboy (think Cajun Philly cheesesteak), this place has the goods to stand up to any other shop in the city. A favorite of locals, musicians, and Guy Fieri of Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, this spot is a great place to relax with friends and have some cold beer and some of the best poboys you will find anywhere.” -Bill Teeter
Other Great Spots
Danny and Clyde’s: Located in multiple gas stations around the area (the one I used to go to is on Clearview), this quick, cheap stop might be in a gas station but it is delicious.
Mahoney’s: From what I have read, this is a great little place down on Magazine St. and has won a lot of awards for their Po-boys, but I have not had the pleasure of trying them yet.
There you have it! When you head down to NOLA you need to grab yourself a Po-Boy and these are some place that will not disappoint!
What are some other favorites people have??
