Santorini: A Jewel in the Aegean
As I talked about in our last post about our awesome AirBnB, we arrived from Athens and took a transport set up by our host to his awesome little place. It was located in the town of Oia which might be the most picturesque town on the island and has the famous blue domes you see in many pictures.
Other towns like Fira are bigger and have more night life, but for our purposes Oia was perfect.
Our trip so far:
The entire crescent-shaped island is really the remains of a once active volcano. It has steep cliffs facing the inside of the crescent, or caldera, and mostly flat lands on the opposite side.
Oia is located at the northern most tip of the main island, with Fira being kind of in the middle and finally, the airport and some of the black beaches are in the southeast portion.
Now this is certainly not a comprehensive review of the island but just wanted to share some of the areas we saw and mostly a ton of pictures to really give you a feel for the beauty of the island with some tips on where to eat and some fun things to do!
First of all, just being in and walking around Oia is a treat in and of itself. As I mentioned before, it is as beautiful as advertised and especially in the morning or the evenings when the cruise ship crowds have died down, it is a really peaceful place.
While in town there are a few places you need to go. First, you obviously need to get pictures of the 3 blue domes and the best little alley to get a good view of them is in front of a church toward the south of town that seems kind of jammed in with the other buildings. If you are walking down the main sidewalk you will definitely see it. Take that alley in front of it and they should be right there!
Another MUST DO in Oia is to go to the north side of town and see the fort and the sunset there with all the other tourist. It might be crowded, but there is a reason for that…it is awesome! Usually after the sunset there is a mass exodus from town as the cruise ships all load back up. Here our a few of my favorites:
Finally, just walking around town is a great use of time if you came to visit for the day:
Let’s Eat [OIA Edition]
When it comes to places to eat here are some great choices:
Breakfast- VITRIN! Awesome crepes, awesome coffee and awesome view! This place is located just north of the fort and we actually went here 3 times.
Lunch- Pitagyros! This is just a little place that we actually just got take out from but it is AWESOME! GO HERE for all your gyro needs!
Dinner- Karma! Went here for dinner our first night and it was fantastic!
Obviously we spent most of our time in Oia but there are a lot of other things to do on the island such as:
Go to a winery!
Go to a brewery! (the beer was really, really good)
Visit the black beaches!
Cruise around in a little car or 4 wheeler!
Hopefully this gave you a little bit of a feel for Santorini and hopefully you enjoyed the pictures! This is a place that Katie and I (and Katie especially) had wanted to go for a long time and it lived up to the hype! I would recommend however, going in the “shoulder season” when it isn’t busy summer tourist season but not cold, we went in late May and it was perfect!
After a great stay on the island it was off to our next stop! MILAN!
