Hotel Review: Hotel ZaZa, Houston TX
In stark contrast to my review of the Francis Marion Hotel a couple weeks ago , the Hotel Zaza, located near the medical campus’s in Houston is an ultra modern, eclectic, luxury hotel.
I was in Houston for 3 nights at a Vascular Surgery seminar and skills session which took place at Methodist hospital and Hotel ZaZa. I took an Uber from Hobby Airport which was surprisingly only $17 and was immediately impressed with the unique decor of the front lobby which includes a koi pond, sitting area, and interesting art work. The check-in process was very relaxed and it seems that the employees are told to act very casual and “cool.” But, you know what? It works, I liked it. Across the lobby from the front desk is the fine dining restaurant, Monarch, which also has a main entrance on the outside. As you go deeper into the hotel from the front door you find a business center to the left and a bank of elevators just on the other side of the koi pond. There is then another seating area with a piano as well as several different conference rooms for the many events they host (like the one I was at).
My room was located on the second floor which is also where the pool, spa and gym are located. My room, 229, was actually directly across from the door to the gym.
I was told that there was no coffee in the room but that each floor had a Butler Pantry set up which provided coffee, tea and newspapers every morning.
My first impression of my room was, wow, things are just bigger in Texas! I had a basic Queen Room and there was so much room for activities! The room consisted of a queen bed, desk/dresser combo, a lounge chair and small table.
Complementary waters and chocolates were provided each day and there was also a small mini fridge and snacks for purchase.
As much as I was impressed with this hotel I think one of my favorite aspect was the free shuttle rides. And by shuttle I mean personal GMC Denali with horns on the front!
This shuttle will take you anywhere with in 5 miles of the hotel and I made great use of it going to an Astros game, out to dinner and meeting up with friends at a bar in Rice Village. You can even call them and they will come pick you up!
If you get a chance to go up to some of the AWESOME suites on the 12th floor here are some cool views of Houston you can see:
Any Restaurant Suggestions?
Bombay Pizza Company! So, usually when I think pizza I don’t also think Indian food, but IT WORKS! My friend Kevin (yes, we have the same name) and I walked here after an Astros game and it was delicious! It’s located at 914 Main St. downtown but I believe there is another location as well. Both pizzas were very good and of course unique, which I liked. I know one was the Slumdog but can’t remember the other. AND BONUS, this is in 5 miles of the hotel so free ride there and back!
I was really impressed with this hotel. I wasn’t sure what to expect when going there as sometimes I feel like these “cool” hotels just try to hard and it comes off as weird or to over simplified. I’m looking at you Aloft, I don’t get some of your hotels. Anyway, I didn’t actually pay for this hotel during my trip, but it seems to go for about $260 on random weekend dates I plugged in which I’m sure is very dependent on what events are being hosted. I would happily stay here again…even if I had to pay 😉
