My sister-in-law reminded me of a great use of airline miles today. Something most people (that aren’t obsessed with points, that is) don’t think about.
Because of technical complications with the booking of her flight, she happened to realize today that the flight she had tonight didn’t exist! Long story short, the flight booking never went through, and she never got an email confirmation (Flyers – if you don’t get an email conversation, it’s for a reason, look into it!). Anyway, I digress….
Buying a same day flight to Fort Lauderdale (FLL) from Baltimore (BWI) today on Southwest would have cost her ~$450. Instead, she was able to save her weekend in Florida (for Katie’s bachelorette party!) and use a stash of Southwest points to get the flight.
Unexpected events happen all the time in our lives. Miles and points can be there to make events easier to get to and can save you from FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). It’s a rare disease; I run this site with a doctor – I’m pretty sure I know medicine.
Whether it’s for hotels or flights, points can come in handy for last minute bookings. Sometimes you have to pay a surcharge to book last minute reservations (in addition to your points), but it pales in comparison to actually purchasing the room/flight.
Just wanted to give y’all a little reminder on the power of points and how they can help you in a bind!
Kevin and I embark on our whirlwind trip around the world starting tomorrow, so be sure to follow along with just on Instagram and get ready for lots of trip reports!
