Top 10 arbitrary absolutely MUST SEE places of 2018
Around this time of year if you look at different travel site or news outlets you will invariably see something along the lines of “Best Places to travel in 2018” or “25 Must See Cities of 2018.”
Have you ever looked at these things? They usually have very little or absolutely nothing to do with the year, and are basically just a list of places around the world. Now, occasionally there is a reason to go in that year, but that is not usually the case, and if it is the case, then the reason is usually pretty weak (go to Canada in 2017 for it’s 150th anniversary…pretty sure it won’t be that different unless there is a specific event).
Anyway, in doing my research it appears there are some rules to coming up with this list and they are as follows:
SO, those are the rules. You’ll notice that, other than rule 5, there’s really nothing speaking to that specific year in which you MUST GO to these things.
With the rules out of the way, here is my list in no particular order!
-And I will kind of break the rules because going in 2018 is kind of important for a couple of these-
1. New Orleans, USA
With amazing food, awesome drinks, Jazzfest, Mardi Gras, fantastic music, great weather and the special feel in the city that I simply can’t describe but keeps you wanting to delve further into the city’s history and culture, New Orleans is truly a special place. With all that being said, you obviously don’t need a special reason to go in 2018, but, if you do, then, on top of all that, it is also the city’s 300th Anniversary in 2018 and if one city knows how to do a year long celebration, this is the one!
2. Brussels, Belgium
I needed a secondary European city, so here you go! Brussels is really a great city though. The food (waffles, fries, etc) and beer are awesome of course but it is also very clean, with beautiful architecture and gardens as well as friendly people. From the Grand Place to Manniken Pis there is plenty to see. I would love to stop here again when going around Europe and just like Paris, there is a high speed train under the English Channel to take you right from London to the middle of Brussels! So now is the time to go to Brussels because, ummm, it is on a 2018 travel list!
3. Seoul, South Korea
Seoul may just be the best city on earth. If you want the world’s busiest street crossings and buzz, you can have it. But if you’re searching for a zen experience with the most polite, respectful and admirable culture – Seoul is unbeatable. Enjoy strolls through the Changdeokgung Palace grounds or through the narrow, beautiful streets of the Bukchon Hanock Village in between jaunts to Korean BBQ like nowhere else, and kimchi you won’t soon forget.
(For this one I literally just copied the wording from another site’s “MUST SEE” post I read, of their large Asian city of choice and changed the name, the famous site and the food. It literally tells you nothing about why your should go in 2018. And is obviously vague and generic if I can just turn it into another city so easily haha)
4. Choquequirao, Peru
Most people have heard of Machu Picchu, but few have heard of her less famous sister city, Choquequirao. Nestled hidden in the clouds of Peru like Machu Picchu, this mountaintop sanctuary was built 50 years or so later by the Incas and currently only welcomes some 10-20 visitors a day compared the to the thousands of visitors to the more famous city 60km away. The reason for the lack of tourists is the 4-5 day round trip hike that is needed to visit, making this a very remote destination. However, this tranquil spot could be changing very soon with plans in place to build a major road AND a cable car in hopes of more than doubling the number of visitors in the next 3 years. This is one of the ones you should see this year!
5. Bogota/Medellin/Cartagena, Colombia
Known for some time as I was growing up as a rather dangerous place to visit, Columbia has had a huge resurgence and has become a very hot destination recently. I have heard glowing things about each of these cities with their food, art, culture and history really impressing visitors. This has been quickly rising up my must go to list and it seems it will be easy for most to get there. Keep your eyes peeled because I have seen A LOT of very cheap flights from the east and west cost to these cities in the $300 range round trip over the last few months! A reason to go this year might be due to the awesome airfare prices!
I’m calling it now. This is the next big tropical destination. Caribbean, Maldives, Fiji, Bora Bora, Seychelles, move over because Mauritius is going to be right up there with you or pass you! With crystal clear waters, beautiful mountains, botanical gardens, and a very interesting culture mixed with European, African and Indian influences, Mauritius is far more than just a place to just lay on the beach. So go to this jewel in the Indian Ocean before everyone else does and by going in 2018 you will be able to help them celebrate their 50th anniversary of independence!
7. Cape Town, South Africa
I don’t even know where to start with this city. With beautiful scenery EVERYWHERE, awesome beaches, incredible surrounding wine country, the Cape of Good Hope, penguins on beach, great food, fascinating culture and a rich and sometimes troubling history, Cape Town is truly a special place and one of my favorite cities in the world. Since I first visited 7 years ago it has quickly risen up the ranks in popularity and now is talked about quite often on travel sites. You need to go there this year because the sooner you get there the sooner you can plan another trip to go back!! (Heading back there in July and can’t wait)
8. Muscat, Oman
Located next to the United Arab Emirates which have their popular cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Oman is more low key but appears to have plenty to keep you occupied. With it’s rocky cost line, desserts, wadis and unique city architecture, it might be worth taking the short hop (plane or car) over the border to experience a very different geography just down the road from the UAE. Maybe I will actually go here in 2018…hhhhmmmm
9. Tikal, Guatemala
Not as popular as Chichen Itza in Mexico but equally as impressive. These Mayan ruins tucked back in the jungles of Guatemala will take your breath away. This is on my ever-growing list of must see places at some point….so why not 2018!?
10. Valletta, Malta (rules are rules)
As I said before, this place is on almost every travel list (which maybe means you shouldn’t go there) and one of the reasons seems to be that this city was name the European Capital of Culture for 2018 (along with Leeuwarden, Netherlands). Malta does seem like a very interesting destination with beautiful landscape, cobblestone streets, beaches and medieval influences. It has been a place on my list for a few years and if you want to be part of the hundreds of celebrations taking place in the capital city of this beautiful Mediterranean island than 2018 is the time to go! Some sites stated that now is the time to go before more cruises start going there, but let’s face it, if cruise ships are already going there then you are too late.
So there you have it! Your MUST SEE places of 2018!
I am actually planning on going to several of these places this year so I’m getting a bit excited.
I will have to do one of these next year…then again I can probably just copy the whole thing and change the date… 😉
