GREAT AA Award Space to Europe for Spring/Summer 2017
As many of you know the “SAAver” award space for American Airlines Business class awards on their own planes has been really bad for a long time now. They have had random moments where the flood gates seem to open but, other than that, they don’t seem to release anything, and this almost always seems to be the case to Europe. Now, there are “AAnytime” awards that charge around twice as many miles that are usually available but who wants to spend twice as much!
You can find partner flights using either American Airlines search engine for very few of their partners or BA.com for all of them, but most of the that award space is on British Airways which can charge heavy surcharges, especially on premium award seats. So flying on American Airlines metal could save your several hundred dollar per person each way!
Here are some examples of the current availability next spring/summer:
Chicago to London
Washington DC to London
Chicago to Paris
Dallas to London
So as you can see, it’s pretty bad. It’s actually even worse than it seems from these pictures because the few shots with light blue “saaver” awards were actually through JFK (it wasn’t letting me have the one-way drop down a couple times for some reason)! So it’s more likely that they might have been the only “saaver” awards out of the US to London at that time. So really there were ZERO in these screen shots direct out of that city.
We could go through more examples of US and European cities but you get the point, it is beyond terrible. Some believed this would improve after the devaluation (because they said it would), but it hasn’t.
With that being said, some things never change and old reliable is still there to book. As I wrote about in January, Manchester is really the key to getting to and from Europe. As you will see, the business class availability is pretty good (although anything is better than ZERO) and you can connect to most places with American Airlines’ partners Iberia, British Airways and Finnair after arriving in Manchester.
So lets take a look at the availability for Manchester. All of these charts are direct flights for 2 people on American Airlines metal next Spring/Summer.
Manchester to New York
New York to Manchester
Manchester to Philadelphia
Philadelphia to Manchester
Manchester to Chicago
Chicago to Manchester
Is this space AMAZING? Well, no, but it good and really, at least there is some! The Chicago route even flies a new B787 which I will be trying out next week!
As we all know, the hardest part is getting over the ocean and then you can figure it out. So if you are looking for award space for next Spring/Summer, you might want to route through Manchester. Could be helpful on the way there or back.
Anyone else know of good secret AA award routes? Dublin use to be pretty good but it is pretty dead now.
